PALM Expo 2011 to host “The Battle of the DJs” at the Performance Arena

DJ Uri and DJ Reji to judge the highly energetic DJ Competition and conduct “One Day DJ Taster Session”

16 May, 2011 - Mumbai, India – PALM Expo will host a series of live events for the DJ community in the form of competitions and workshops. PALM Expo, India’s only exhibition and conference for the pro audio, lighting, music, live sound and install sound industry, is scheduled to be held from 2 - 4 June, 2011 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai, India.

The Battle of the DJs is a debut initiative by PALM Expo to provide a platform to the DJs to showcase their recording and mixing talent and thus gain better recognition. A total of eight contestants will compete at the Performance Arena set up at the show floor of PALM Expo on the first day of the Expo. The contenders will be provided with two Pioneer CDJ1000MK3 CD Players, two Technics SL1200/10MK2 Turntables, one Pioneer DJM 800 Mixer and one Microphone to play at least three tracks within the allotted time. The Performance Arena will thus be electrified with the best of the disc spinning talent offering a stunning experience to one and all.

DJ Uri, the multi-talented DJ and music tutor and DJ Reji, the Resident DJ title owner at Bonobo Bar, the buzzing bistro and bar in Bandra, Mumbai will judge the competition. DJ Uri comes with an experience of 17 years in the field of mixing sound both in the UK & Indian DJ, Nightlife & Social life. DJ Uri runs his own DJ Academy, Start from Scratch, offering DJ, Music Production & Lyric Writing Workshops across the UK. An accredited tutor for several educational organizations, he is an accomplished Teacher and DJ. DJ Reji has a musical experience spanning for more than a decade.

The year 2010 saw DJ Uri putting on his own events in Mumbai, promoting and playing the Funk, Soul and Hip-Hop music from the yesteryears. An avid music collector, sourcing and buying records for over 25 years, Uri covers all sub genres of Urban Music. His versatility and DJ skills allow him to fuse styles and influences from the 1970’s through to the present day, with a flick of the fader. The depth of DJ Uri’s record collection and the knowledge he has gained over the years are a credit to the Hip-Hop culture. This Scratch DJ is at ease performing club nights, collaborating with a band or live act, providing beats for MCs as well as competing in DJ battles. A music connoisseur, with an array of turntablist tricks, scratch techniques and multi-use of effects, he delivers more than an average performance. With a career spanning over two decades, DJ Uri has been true to the Hip-Hop movement. Confirming his participation as a Judge at The Battle of the DJs, Uri noted, “Coming from the UK and being part of the Palm Expo 2011, India’s biggest pro sound & lighting exhibition is incredible. Events like this are the backbone to India’s thriving music scene. It’s only going to get bigger and better”.

The jury of The Battle of the DJs will also include DJ Reji, a proficient DJ and A&R of Air Snare Records. Reji Ravindran (also known as rayG) has won many key DJ championships and titles including the DMC Champion of Pune (2000), the War of the DJs winner from Mumbai (2007) & Kingfisher Ultra DJ (2010). Besides DJing, he has also trained more than 500 local and international aspirants in some of the most respected DJing institutes and schools in Mumbai. At Air Snare Records, he promotes Indian artists and their music into the global electronic dance music scenario. rayG is another project (read alter ego) of Reji. rayG is notoriously known for dishing out a different spectrum of music wherein he fuses his turntable skills with eclectic & cross-genre party beats and breaks.

Along with an exhibit floor to display products and technology and a Performance Arena to bring the experience of sound and music live to the attendees, PALM Expo will also organize conference and seminar sessions for the discerning pro audio knowledge seekers. DJ Uri and DJ Reji will conduct a “One Day DJ Taster Course” on the second day of the Conference session. This workshop is an ideal introductory course for beginners interested in learning the skills of DJing. Most of the session will be practical hands-on with theory-based work which will cover the elementary steps in DJ Technique. The workshop will further present lessons on the set-up and maintenance of DJ equipment and its functions, beat matching and basic mix techniques. The attendees will also gain valuable knowledge of song structure and learn about beats and bars. The workshop will further include topics like history of DJ culture and the pioneers who initiated the DJ and music culture. The skills covered will be Equipment set up and break down, Standard hand to record and hand to fader technique, Basic music theory, Basic mixing and blending, Basic scratch techniques, History on DJing and Hip-Hop Culture, What does one gain from this course?, Valuable knowledge in preparation for further learning, Insight into the world of DJ Culture and career advice, Information and guidance on DJ Courses, and Tips and Advice from Industry Professionals.
